Are you interested in starting a career in the waxing industry? Esthetics is a great option for you to learn all about this popular hair removal treatment. Let’s explore the things you need to do to make this dream come true.

Understanding Waxing Licenses

If you’re interested in waxing, but are wondering what it takes to do so professionally, one of the first things you need to determine is what license you need to make that happen. Different types of licenses allow you to perform waxing services—whether you need cosmetology, waxing, or esthetician certification will vary by state. Generally speaking, because waxing is related to hair removal on the skin, a foundation in esthetics is a good place to start, but if waxing is your ultimate goal, make sure you know what program is required to obtain a waxing license in your state. Your esthetician program will offer a range of services that you can specialize in based on your interests. Estheticians typically provide various services that pair nicely with waxing, such as facials, skincare treatments, body treatments, and makeup application.

Since there are some health and safety risks for both wax technicians and clients, it’s important to get your license from a reputable (meaning accredited) university. You must receive the proper education and training to safely perform these services. When narrowing down your options of beauty schools that offer wax technician training, always check for accreditation. An accredited school has met key performance and educational standards set and monitored by an industry oversight agency and the United States Department of Education.

How to Become a Licensed Wax Esthetician

In terms of waxing license requirements, there are certain criteria you must meet to perform these services. Essentially, to perform waxing services, you must be a licensed comsetologist, barber, or esthetician. Often, students interested in specializing in wax services opt for esthetics training. What Does a Waxing Technician Do?

Waxing is a hair removal technique that uses melted wax to pull unwanted body hair out at the root. This slows the growth of hair and leaves a smooth, hairless result. This service is commonly performed on the legs, arms, face, and back. Waxing technicians typically work in salons, spas, and hair removal or waxing studios. A typical day as a waxing technician may include:

  • Conducting consultations with clients on their goals and preferences
  • Educating clients about waxing preparation, procedures, and after-care
  • Performing waxing services along with other hair removal techniques, such as tweezing or threading
  • Using relaxation techniques to keep your clients at ease throughout their appointment
  • Providing additional esthetics services you offer, such as facials or makeup applications
  • Scheduling appointments with new and existing clients
  • Ensuring your waxing practices follow all health, safety, and sanitation regulations
  • Cleaning and sterilizing your equipment, tools, and work environment
  • Building relationships with new and existing clients to establish trust and create a relaxing, welcoming environment
